"Technology Transfer" is a monthly event organized by Nepal-Russia ICT Society at Russian Centre of Science & Culture, Kamal Pokhari on every last Wednesday of English month. The topic for Technology Transfer varies every month. And for this month i.e; December, the topic was Digital Forensic in Nepal. The event was organized by BSCCSIT.com in association with Nepal Russia ICT Society.

The speaker for this event was Mr. Himal Ojha who graduated M.Sc. in Electronic Security and Digital Forensics, UK. Mr. Ojha is consultant for Nepal Telecommunication Authority & Nepal Police as well digital forensic expert. The event became a golden opportunity for me to gain something new for which I had been quite excited.

Mr. Ojha justified digital forensic through a slideshow presentation. Beginning with the meaning of digital forensic, Mr. Ojha clarified the basic concepts. Digital forensic deals with the forensic science including investigation of material found on digital devices. Everyone should be well known regarding who is the victim and who actually needs digital forensic. In the present situation of Nepal, digital forensic and cyber crime law is not brought into action. With the name of cyber law, Nepal has been implementing Electronic Transaction Act - 2006. It's almost a decade of same law being implemented. With the rapid growing in technology, National Strategy on Cyber Crime should be made and implemented very soon in Nepal.
Basically, digital forensic itself is now deeply categorized as:
1. Computer Forensic
2. Network Forensic
3. Database Forensic
4. Mobile Device Forensic
5. Memory Forensic
6. Cloud Forensic
We might think it crazy for digital forensic experts to collect evidences. But in fact, collecting evidences related to any crime helps to solve the case in an effective way. In case of banks, CC Camera footage can be a strong evidence when robbery is done in a bank. According to the digital forensic scientific method, every digital forensic expert must firstly collect the datas and information regarding the crime, Collecting datas and information can be the most important factor for digital forensic expert to solve the case. After the datas and information are collected, analyzing and examining the data collected is a must. Examining and analyzing the data help to understand the case more effectively. In case of digital forensic, there are various methods to collect and analyze datas. When the case study is examined and analyzed, final report should be made based upon the investigation report. Digital forensic experts have good knowledge with special gadgets to gather evidence. It's a must for every digital forensic expert to have a backup copy of any evidence before beginning the investigation.

While performing each and every investigation, all the evidences must be kept confidential and highly protective so that no one can access and destroy or misuse it. Evidence is the only thing to determine whether a person is innocent or guilt in legal actions. While investigation is being carried out, legal rules must also be noticed. No investigation shall be beyond legal rules.

There are academic and technical courses for digital forensic. Academic and technical courses on digital forensic and cyber security plays a vital role to eradicate cyber crime. Unfortunately, no such courses has been introduced yet in Nepal. According to Rajan Kandel (CEO,BSCCSIT.com), they shall be introducing such course in upcoming days. In the same event, Mr. Kandel informed about their future plan to bring cyber crime related professional courses into Nepal by cooperating with necessary organization and Nepal Government.

Here are the academic courses related to digital forensic which can be done from abroad.
1. B.Sc. Digital Forensic
2. B.Sc. Cyber Security
3. M.Sc. Digital Forensic
4. PhD Cyber Security & Digital Forensic

The present status of cyber security and digital forensic is very very poor. And the main reason behind this being poor is no proper law. National cyber law is not addressed yet. After the national strategy on cyber law is addressed, we can expect cyber crime to be reduced. Nepal Police and other legal bodies of Nepal are lacking skilled professionals on digital forensic. With the same vision, Mr. Ojha has established Casper Nepal which shall be providing suggestions and preventive measures. Mr. Ojha has a wish to make Nepal free from cyber crime. Digital forensic tools are generally categorized into two types. Firstly, for commercial purpose and secondly, open source. Usually, normal people (citizens) don't have approach to digital forensic. Only legal bodies are given approach with digital forensic.

Overall, I got wonderful chance to gain something interesting. I'd like to thank organizers for this and I expect them to organize similar workshops time and again. Together, we can combat cyber crime. At the end of event, Mr. Ojha added, "I neither work for Nepal Police nor Nepal Telecommunication Authority. I personally work for Casper Nepal". Lastly, I'd like to end this blog by saying "Think Before You Click" & "Surf Smart, Stay Safe".
